Today, on Tolkien International Day, I bring you my top 5 Lord of the Rings board games, based on my preferences, tastes, and the fun I’ve had playing them. And I’ve also included a bonus game that I think is essential to mention.

Number 5:
Lord of de Rings, by Rainar Knitzia

One of the first modern cooperative games. Featuring resource management and constant tension.

Number 4:
The Risk version of The Lord of the Rings

And here you’re probably thinking, “Doctor, seriously, Risk?” Well, yes, that’s right, because it doesn’t have to be a Eurogame to be a great game. The classic game of conquest is perfectly suited to reflect the mythical War of the Ring. With simple rules, but equally enjoyable. And it’s also ideal for introducing new players.

Number 2:
The Lord of the Rings LCG card game

Where you have to build your deck of cards to face brutal scenarios. Truly difficult challenges, but when you overcome them, they become epic moments.

Number 2:
The One Ring. The Lord of the Rings role-playing game.

Immerse yourself in Middle-earth by playing your own character. Experience immersive rules for travel, combat, challenges, and the mood of your company. But also face an enemy more dangerous than orcs: your inner shadow.

Number 1:
The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth

This is currently my top choice for its narrative approach and successful combination of mechanics. Cooperative, with tiles, miniatures, and even an app that guides you through the game. A game that makes you feel like you’re living an adventure on a game board.

But wait, here comes my bonus game from this top:

The Middle-earth Collectible Card Game.

And this was, for me, not only my first card game, but also my gateway to Tolkien’s fantasy world. A game where you build your company of characters, travel through Middle-earth, face adversity, and acquire items, allies, and recruit factions. It feels like pure Tolkien.

And that’s it for this TOP list.

I hope you enjoyed it, and feel free to comment which one you like best or if you have any other favorite games.
If you’ve made it this far, you’re already a true Frikistein…and I’ll see you in the next post!
